The Midwinter

For some reason this sweater reminds me of Lapland, polar lights... Thus the name.

I only had 3 skeins of yarn and had to unravel other sweater's sleeves to finish this one (the old one looks like poncho now and I like it even more that way ☺).

I made a small ornament with a crochet hook.

Почему-то у меня ассоциации с Лапландией, северным сиянием... Поэтому назвала этот свитер "Зимнее солнцестояние".

У меня было 3 мотка Ализе, и пришлось еще распустить рукава у другого свитера - но ему это пошло только на пользу, получилось пончо ☺
Вязала в две нити, и очень нравится, как перемешиваются цвета в процессе. 
Украсила крючком.

It got buttons finally! What can I say about this cardi? Beautiful, just beautiful (either pattern and yarn and the feelings). I was so excited I didn't even have patience to make a proper photo session, just took some photos right after finishing it (early morning it was, you can see it on my face.). ☺

Готов мой кардиган Джинни! Точнее, готов он был уже неделю назад, но пуговицы я купила только вчера. Что я могу сказать - прекрасная вещь - замечательный дизайн, красивые нитки и масса удовольствия в процессе.Так хорош, что у меня терпения не хватило устроить приличную фотосессию - помчалась фотографироваться прямо с утра, как закончила (что заметно по моему слегка помятому виду) )).

Finally I've finished it. I wished me a very warm, very cosy, country-style sweater from pure "country" wool, and (though not without some flaws) I made it!

Наконец-то готов мой "деревенский" свитер. Косяков много, в частности, потекла краска во время стирки, и тем не менее я очень довольна.
Вязала по кругу до пройм, и рукава тоже по кругу. 
Шерсть латвийская - Лимбажу Тине и какая-то неопознанная тоже из Латвии, судя по всему, ручного прядения. Мне очень понравилось ею вязать и сам результат - то, как преображается вещь после стирки. Больше фото на Равелри.
Если кто-то знает, как убрать потеки, пожалуйста, скажите мне тоже ☺

I guess Cinque Alto (02) by Lana Grossa is going to be one of my favourite yarns if not the most favourite. It's so soft and warm and the colour is just beautiful.

Guernsey Sweaters

The fisherman's sweater known as a Guernsey Sweater (or in dialect - gansey), was developed over 400 years ago during the reign of Elizabeth I when wool was first imported from England. It can be traced along Britain's coastlines, from the Channel Islands to the north of Scotland.

Pattern here

Traditional Guernsey Sweaters are hand knitted in five ply yarn and in blue (using indigo, the natural dye), to imitate the fishermen's natural working environment of the sea and sky. They are seamless, having been knitted 'in the round', using four or five double-ended steel wires or pins.

Some Guernsey Sweaters are plainly knitted, but others incorporate sea-related patterns, with cable or motif designs. These differ from knitter to knitter, and area to area.
Sadly, it was these unique designs which were used to identify fishermen who had been washed overboard, so they could be returned home to their families for burial.

Because the Guernsey sweater is so tightly knitted, the garment's design and patterns provide insulation, as well as water and wind resistance.
Wool is also highly absorbent and, because it releases water slowly, cannot easily be washed off the wearer's back. 

A Guernsey sweater is designed for longevity, with identical patterns on the front and back of the sweater. This means the jumper can be worn both ways if excessive wear occurs, such as on the elbows.
When families were so poor that clothes were repaired and routinely passed from generation to generation, the cuffs and sleeves would also be unravelled and re-knitted, often in a different shade of yarn.

Some fishermen were lucky enough to own a 'Sunday best' sweater for special occasions, and a lighter-weight Guernsey Sweater for the summer.
These would be knitted in three or four ply yarn, in a different colour of pale grey or fawn.
